The Covington Day Reporting Center in Louisiana has partnered with a local hospital’s parenting center to assist and help the parenting center’s fundraising efforts. DRC participants volunteer their time to work events that the center hosts, as well as set up seasonal decorations to spruce the center up during the holidays. Community service is an important component in reentry because it strengthens participants’ social integration skills.
The non-profit center visits the DRC at least once a month to conduct community groups discussing topics such as “feelings,” “building self-worth,” and “avoiding stress.” Many of these groups are filled with fun activities and open discussion.
“It’s an honor and a pleasure to have developed such a strong partnership,” the education coordinator for the non-profit parenting center said. “Both groups are needed in the community, and for each other.”
