REDDING, Calif. — GEO Reentry Services and the Shasta County Probation Department will host an open house to celebrate the five-year anniversary of the Shasta County Day Reporting Center on Thursday, April 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. The event is open to the public. Local officials, probation and center staff, community partners and participants and program graduates will be on hand.
Located at 1415 Court Street, the Shasta County DRC has been effective in reducing recidivism and lessening pressure on the local jail. The center can serve up to 150 probationers and provides a structured combination of evidence-based practices, training, case management and referrals to community services that help stabilize participants in the community.
The center opened in April 2013 in response to California’s AB 109 legislation, which shifted the responsibility of thousands of offenders from the state to counties. The program focuses on reducing the likelihood of reoffending, a long-term benefit to the community in reduced correctional costs and lower crime. Since opening, the Shasta County DRC participants have recidivated at a rate of only 24 percent as compared to a much higher rate statewide.
At the center, participants attend a number of groups, including substance abuse education; Life Skills development; cognitive behavioral therapy; parenting and family training; anger management; employment skills building and career development counseling; and aftercare. Individuals move through phases at the center based on performance.
